Burnout at the bedside is causing a crisis in nursing

"Every shift feels like a pick-up football game."

And not in a good way. Two years into the pandemic and in the midst of the latest hospital staffing crisis, nurses have finally gotten the country’s attention when it comes to burnout and attrition within our most trusted profession. More and more nurses are trading staff positions for jobs as travel nurses, or leaving nursing entirely. Nurse and researcher Jane Muir says this makes it feel like nurses never know who is on their team.

"It's every day showing up and going, so who are you again?" Muir said. "You walk into every shift subconsciously very fearful. And you don't feel very valued and safe in those conditions."
