STATUS List: Get the inside scoop on our new initiative

Dear Readers,

It is with great excitement that I announce a new annual STAT initiative. On Feb. 22, we will unveil our inaugural STATUS List, the most definitive and consequential accounting of important and impactful individuals in health, medicine, and science. Many of these people are well-known to you as influential players in the world of life sciences; others were largely unheralded heroes in 2021. All have compelling stories to tell.

We’re picking 46 individuals to make the list — an homage to the number of chromosomes in human DNA.

There’s no easy prescription for assembling this kind of list. STAT leaned on its seasoned editorial team to identify and research hundreds of finalists, surveying specific sectors such as biotechnology, diagnostics, and health care AI, as well as broader arenas including education, patient advocacy, and policy. Then, with the help of a group of very respected external judges, we made many hard decisions.

The months-long process has been challenging, at times painstaking, as we narrowed down our selections, but highly rewarding.

We took this project on because we believe there has never been a better time to recognize leaders and changemakers in life sciences. We also hope that it will serve as a guide to you. This new initiative joins two other STAT programs that recognize impactful people and institutions: STAT Wunderkinds, which just celebrated its fifth year, and STAT Madness, which is currently accepting applications.

Beyond announcing the STATUS List in February, we will organize virtual and live events to honor the 46 who made the list.

I hope you share my excitement about this project, and look forward to it not only this year but in the years to come.
