Study reveals groups at high risk for multiple myeloma have elevated rates of a precursor condition
People over 50 who are Black or have a close relative with a blood cancer were found in the PROMISE study to have a rate of 13 percent of monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS), which can progress to multiple myeloma. Investigators say screening of high-risk groups to detect individuals with MGUS could, when combined with regular monitoring and treatment, improve the survival of patients who develop myeloma.
