I’m proud that health equity is at the forefront of our medical coverage here at STAT. Our journalism has delved into everything from the lack of Black doctors in orthopedic surgery to inequities in colorectal cancer. Now, to continue our mission of illuminating the stark disparities in the American health care system, STAT has launched our newest podcast: “Color Code.” Every other week we’ll explore an aspect of the intersection of racism and medicine through this eight-episode podcast. Our first episode, debuting March 21, deals with medical mistrust, where we’ll look at how historical and present-day medical misdeeds have eroded trust in the health care system. One of our guests for this episode is Reed Tuckson, a physician and co-founder of the Black Coalition Against COVID. He’ll discuss his experiences trying to repair the relationship between Black communities and the medical establishment. I’m so looking forward to the issues we’ll cover and the stories we’ll tell in “Color Code.” We hope that through these interviews with patients, researchers, and doctors, we can help make strides toward addressing racial health gaps in our country. You can listen to a trailer on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and elsewhere.
