When a dire text message interrupted his talk, this doctor’s cancer research became painfully real

If you’d seen him, you wouldn’t have known Scott Lippman was living through one of the most harrowing days of his 35-year career. The veteran oncologist rushed home from a conference to welcome one of his patients — someone he had come to see as a friend — into his home to recover. “It just was the first time for me that my lives would converge or collapse,” Lippman said. “My work life, my patients, my research just all became very real.”
