Cancer surgeon Laura Esserman (above) was determined from the start that her breast cancer screening trial would have broad representation from people of color. Instead, she has learned a lot about how big the gap is between good intentions and good results. Without a host of strategies tailored to gain the participation of specific communities, a clinical trial may need what Consuelo Wilkins, a professor of medicine and a health equity expert at Vanderbilt University, calls a rescue.
