Dear Readers: I’m thrilled to announce the seventh annual STAT Madness competition, when universities, medical schools, and nonprofit research institutions compete for recognition that they have produced the most exciting biomedical discovery or innovation of the past year. With the past couple of challenging years behind us, we are reminded of how valuable scientific research is — and how important it is to celebrate the work happening across the country. My hope is that you’ll take part in the bracket-like competition, STAT’s most popular event of the year. The entry period is now open for the 2023 competition, which honors research published in 2022. Enter Now Last year, we had over 110 nominations, from which we built a bracket of 64 research institutions. After hundreds of thousands of votes, the team from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, was crowned the bracket winner. In addition, that same team took home the Summit Madness Champion award when pitted against other Madness teams at our Breakthrough Summit pitch contest. Read more about the winning team. STAT Madness is a celebration of extraordinary science and school spirit. It’s a chance to brag about your alma mater and its work on the frontiers of medicine. We’re gratified by how many institutions have thrown themselves into the competition, year after year, with videos, memes, rallies, and other efforts to make their work stand out. Let the best science win! Richard L. Berke Co-founder & Executive Editor |
