The 2023 STAT Summit is only a few weeks away
Dear STAT reader,
The first time I interviewed Michael J. Fox on stage was a decade ago. I'm still quoting from the interview at parties. How do you get scientists to work together? "Dangle grant money."
Every time I've interviewed him, Fox has been trenchant, irascible, and hysterical, living up to his legend. (You can see the evidence in this profile from earlier this year.)
That's why I'm thrilled that I'll get to interview Fox and his partner-in-disease-advocacy, Debi Brooks, at the 2023 STAT Summit, being held in Boston on Oct. 18-19. They'll join an amazing roster of speakers that includes the CEOs of Biogen, and GSK, as well as academic luminaries like health sciences experimenter Amy Finkelstein and health equity researcher Monica McLemore. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will also join us virtually.
But as big as the names get, we'll keep the focus on the human costs and benefits of the health care system we have. That's why we're hosting a conversation with Abdullah Pratt, a Chicago ER doc, who has a front row seat to the problems of health equity and violence in his hometown. And another with the poet and author Meghan O'Rourke, whose recent bestseller documents her own battle with autoimmune disease. We'll also host a panel discussion on the problems that patients dealing with addiction have with getting access to methadone – and whether the way the drug is regulated needs to change.

I promise that you'll learn a lot, and run through a lot of emotions, too. The kind that can leave you wiser as you go back to work at understanding the complicated and bedeviling health care system that we all live in.
I hope to see you there.
Best,
Matthew Herper
