A New Approach to Behavioral Health: A Call to Action for Giving Tuesday and Beyond
As we navigate the evolving landscape of healthcare, it has become abundantly clear that as a society we can no longer afford to sideline behavioral health. The constant onslaught of reports, studies, and news stories underscore how the mental health crisis has no plans of slowing down, and the repercussions of underestimating and under-supporting populations with co-morbid physical and behavioral health conditions are higher than ever. These issues place an immense strain on healthcare systems. The costs associated with managing individuals with co-occurring behavioral health issues are disproportionately high, further highlighting the urgency for effective solutions.
A New Playbook for Proactive Population Health
At NeuroFlow, we firmly believe that the key to addressing this crisis and achieving financial sustainability lies in a better understanding of the populations we serve. By leveraging technology and making behavioral health a central component of the playbook for population health, industry leaders and healthcare executives can start to identify and support individuals with behavioral health conditions more efficiently. Proactive management across the spectrum of behavioral health severity is the only way we can expect to truly support individuals during difficult times before the consequences become severe.
But when it comes down to it, these issues aren't just statistics; they're a lived experience for one in four people globally. The cost of juggling physical and behavioral health challenges? It's way more than just financial—it's a strain on individuals and our healthcare systems. So, why are we keeping it on the sidelines? As we reflect on our commitment to surfacing and supporting those in need, we wanted to highlight a special aspect of our mission at NeuroFlow.
In addition to supporting general populations with our health system partners like Novant Health, Atlantic Health, and Emory Healthcare or health plans and payers like Magellan, Prudential, and more, NeuroFlow is deeply committed to supporting active duty and veteran populations. This can be seen in the exciting work being done by the U.S. Naval Academy, the Air Force, and the VA when it comes to thinking about how measurement-based care for our active duty service members and retired Veterans shouldn't be exclusive to physical health.
Our company roots in the military and veteran communities inspire us to go above and beyond in addressing the unique behavioral health challenges faced by those who are on active duty or who have served our country. This dedication extends beyond technology, driving us to collaborate with organizations that share our passion for supporting active duty and veteran communities.
Support Life-Changing Programs for Our Nation's Heroes
To that end and with Giving Tuesday upon us, we want to shine a light on the Travis Manion Foundation.
This incredible nonprofit organization is dedicated to empowering veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. Founded in 2017 following the death of 1st Lt Travis Manion (USMC) who was killed in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates, the foundation has impacted more than 78,000 Veterans and survivors, 500,000 young adults, and more than 200,000 volunteers through a variety of programs.
In particular, TMF's programming is grounded in positive psychology and includes: growth training, leadership and volunteer experiences, and an array of resources to support good mental health and wellbeing. The foundation's commitment to service and its impact align seamlessly with a key value at NeuroFlow of "be on a mission to build social value". Through their work, the foundation has helped participating veterans and families of the fallen improve their mental health by 20% and increased connectedness in these groups by 60%. Both stats are critical in combating loneliness and suicide risk in this vulnerable population.
We encourage you to explore the fantastic work being done by the Travis Manion Foundation and consider supporting their initiatives this Giving Tuesday. In particular, the foundation is highlighting its 2024 Spartan Leadership program, which provides a seven-month training course to veterans and families of the fallen, helping them find belonging and improve their mental health and well-being.
Donations to this program will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a $10,000 donation, on Giving Tuesday. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
In closing, perhaps we can consider the words of 1st Lt Travis Manion, USMC when he asked "if not me, then who.." when describing his sense of duty to his country and apply the same mindset when it comes to driving the much needed collaboration and innovation to properly prioritize and address our nation's mental health crisis.
