Good morning health tech readers! I'm no coffee snob. My morning stimulation: one quart of industrial sludge, brewed with love by Mr. Coffee. But I implore you to have a look at this study of a wearable system Italian researchers developed to monitor the physiologic responses of trained judges while tasting coffee. The researchers hope to objectively assess emotional responses to consuming different varieties of java, suggesting the tech could have applications in the coffee production industry. Does this mean future coffees will be certified to make me feel happy? Reach me: mario.aguilar@statnews.com |

Data Oracle leader claims Cerner doesn't compete with Epic LISA LAKE/GETTY IMAGES FOR GEISINGER SYMPOSIUM It may surprise you to know that after acquiring electronic health record vendor Cerner for $28 billion, Oracle no longer views Epic, its main rival on EHR tech, as a competitor. Oracle Health chair David Feinberg recently caught up with my colleague Mohana Ravindranath and discussed how the company wants to ensure that its new data products, including some that use generative AI, play nicely on top of all health records, regardless of the vendor. Still, the fact remains that Epic controls about one third of the EHR market, compared to Cerner's one quarter share, according to data from Mohana's story. Called Headspace XR, the newly launched VR app — developed with funding from Meta — guides users through meditation and other activities meant to encourage mental well-being. Meta funded the development of the app as part of its effort to diversify the appeal of virtual reality beyond gaming. As for Headspace, it views VR as an opportunity to reach a younger audience and study how the technology can influence mental health. For now, Headspace doesn't plan to dive deeper into the metaverse with VR therapy or coaching. Read more here |

Artificial intelligence Overjet raises $53 million to inspect your teeth with AI A while back, my colleague Casey Ross wrote about the rise of companies developing algorithmic products that enable dentists to spot problems earlier. Well, one of the companies in that story, Overjet, just raised $53 million led by March Capital with participation from big name investors like General Catalyst and Insight Partners. The Harvard and MIT spinout has a bundle of Food and Drug Administration cleared products that aid in the diagnosis of oral disease. |
