Innovators in health care have to balance the amazing potential of new technologies with the harsh realities that can often lead to disappointment.
I think that the agenda we've put together for STAT Breakthrough Summit West, being held in San Francisco on May 16, will help attendees find that balance. We'll delve into some of the hottest new areas in science and tech — most notably into artificial intelligence — and also take a look at how the scientific enterprise can run aground.
On AI: Award-winning STAT journalists will interview representatives from Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google DeepMind. We'll watch an AI scribe in real time, and assemble pioneers and a prominent skeptic to kick the tires on all the hype around the use of AI in drug discovery.
But we won't limit ourselves just to AI: We'll take a deep look at wearabletechnology and grapple with the future of health tech after the Change Healthcare mess with Venrock's Bob Kocher. And we'll look at how tech startups are trying to combat the Black maternal mortality crisis.
We'll also evaluate the biggest trends in biotech outside AI. There will be a panel teeing up three startups focused on genomics, fertility, and epigenetics. And STAT's Adam Feuerstein will sit down with Robert Blum, the CEO of Cytokinetics, to track that company's long path to eventual success.
Throughout, we'll solicit questions and debate from an amazing audience of high-level scientists, investors, policymakers, and executives. We hope you'll be among them. And STAT's journalists, recipients of some of the top awards in journalism, will ask sharp and probing questions. We hope that you can join us there.
