Last October, after last year's amazing STAT Summit, I was browsing X when I saw a post from Christina Farr, a former journalist who is now an industry consultant and the author of a widely read newsletter.
"Would love to do a health care conference called 'this sh*t is hard' and you can only speak if you have something of substance to add to the conversation, or lessons learned, or vulnerability. Who's in?"
Farr followed that up with a post saying she had been told no one would pay to attend or sponsor that event. Naturally, I immediately asked if she would want to work together on this year's summit. She is joining us as a special adviser and we are using exactly that lens when planning this year's two-day event. You don't want to miss it.
Yes, we're still basking in the glow (and the fatigue) of our newsmaking spring summits, which examined the role of patients in drug discovery and the big issues around AI in drug development. But we already have plans for an amazing event in October, with speakers including Atul Gawande, Alnylam CEO Yvonne Greenstreet, and microbiology pioneer Barney Graham, whose work was key to developing both the Covid and RSV vaccines.
We promise that there will be a lot more to come, and that our speakers will be delivering, as Farr puts it, "real talk". We'll be focused on drug development, health technology, and the workings of the system. And we'll have sessions featuring many of STAT's amazing, award-winning reporters.
If there wasn't so much work to do I'd tell you that I'm ready for fall. But the STAT team is, as always, raring to go.
I hope to see you there!
