The Lasker Award — sometimes referred to as "America's Nobel" — has been awarded to three scientists who played key roles in the invention of GLP-1 based drugs that are transforming obesity treatment.
This year's winners for biomedical research are Svetlana Mojsov and Joel Habener, who identified and characterized the GLP-1 hormone in the 1980s, and Lotte Knudsen, who led the Novo Nordisk team that created the first GLP-1-mimicking drug approved for obesity. While the discovery of GLP-1 has been recognized with many previous accolades, the Lasker is the most prestigious to include Mojsov — who has until recently been under-recognized for her role in the scientific process.
