You may know that cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy can be detected through a routine eye exam. But did you know that asthma, hypertension, thyroid disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS) can also be diagnosed through an eye exam?
This is more than theoretical.
The 2025 Medicare Vision Insight Report from VSP® Vision Care, which highlights consumer research conducted with nearly 800 Medicare and Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries, reveals that 36% of the survey respondents with MS reported that their disease was first detected by an eye doctor during an eye exam. 15% of respondents with heart disease also said their condition was first spotted during an eye exam. Eye doctors can detect the signs of more than 270 chronic diseases.1
Are you leveraging vision benefits to help facilitate faster identification of chronic diseases through eye exams? If not, you may be missing an opportunity to prevent unnecessary downstream spend, while improving quality metrics and Star Ratings for your MA plans.
