The singer-songwriter Tom Waits is said to have remarked that the average person spends two weeks of their life waiting for a traffic light to change. Well, we're a Waitsian traffic light away from the STAT Summit, and, like Tom, we're about to make some noise.
Here's a look at some of the panelists — including some of the top voices in health care and medicine — who will be showing up.
On pharma and biotech: We'll hear from a panel including the CEOs of Biogen and GSK and the former CEO of Alnylam; we'll talk to executives from two companies that recently ran into surprises at the FDA; and we'll sit down with both the CSO of Eli Lilly and two of biotech's biggest company builders, Arie Belldegrun and Noubar Afeyan. We'll also be joined by the CEO of Akeso, who will talk about China's growing place in the biotech ecosystem.
On the state of science: We'll be speaking with the family of Baby KJ, the infant whose life was changed by gene editing, and the researchers who led the work; we'll hear from a researcher on the cutting edge of cancer immunotherapy and one who is changing how we measure patients in time and space. And we'll talk with Mike Varshavski, widely known as Doctor Mike, whose huge following has led him to become one of the most influential voices in medicine.
On big changes in medicine: We'll also be joined by Daniel Jernigan, a former top CDC official, and Bobby Mukkamala, the president of the American Medical Association. We'll hear from Chris Klomp, the deputy administrator at CMS who, among other things, recently played a key role in drug pricing negotiations between the White House and Pfizer. And we'll take the temperature of the AI revolution in drug discovery with both the new chief medical officer of Isomorphic Labs, spun out of Alphabet's Deep Mind, and Alondra Nelson, who is one of the most trenchant speakers in medicine.
I'd also like to note that I've been going through the roster of people who have signed up to attend, not speak, and it is one of the most impressive crowds I have ever seen. I can't wait to see all of these amazing people — and I really do hope you can join us, too, either virtually or in person.
See you soon!
