After last month's STAT Summit, the events team had a brief moment of respite, which we wasted discussing 90 years of American popular music. My mention of Robert Johnson selling his soul at the crossroads led Damian Gardeto bring up Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "Tha Crossroads," a staple of my college years, and Alex Howley to mention the Britney Spears movie, "Crossroads," which I didn't see because I was busy living in Manhattan. I suppose being at a crossroads is on our minds around here.
Which is to say we have a lot of news to share, including about STAT's return to the Boston stage. Next Tuesday, at the annual Globe Summit held by The Boston Globe, I will be interviewing George Church, a pioneer of DNA sequencing and gene editing, about everything from transplanting pig organs into human beings to bringing back the woolly mammoth. Then on Wednesday, STAT's Anil Oza will be on stage for another, soon-to-be announced session.
STAT will also be back at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 5. That event will feature a big moment: Damian's official return to STAT events after some time away. Damian, known for his gifts of both prose and gab, will be leading a conversation between J&J's head of oncology research and the chief scientific officer of the patient advocacy group Blood Cancer United.
