The 2023 STAT Summit is next week!

Dear STAT reader,

People like to talk about rocket science as if it's the hardest thing you can do. But getting a drug to market can be harder than putting a human on the moon.

We'll get to talk about that with Lotte Bjerre Knudsen. You may not know her name, but as my colleague Megan Molteni wrote in this piece in July, she was a key figure in developing drugs that target the glucagon-like peptide, or GLP-1. It was tough. At one point, a medicine failed while she was on maternity leave. She came back to discover her boss, and most of her colleagues had left.

Now, in case you've been living under a rock, you know GLP-1 inhibitors rank among some of the drugs in the industry as treatments for obesity and diabetes. We'll be going at this topic hard at the annual STAT Summit, which is being held Oct. 18-19 in Boston.

We'll also have an on-stage interview with Daniel Skovronsky, the Eli Lilly CSO who championed Lilly's Mounjaro and the company's experimental GLP-1s, which include an even more potent entrant and a pill. And we'll have a closing session delving deep into the social, economic, and medical consequences of these amazing new drugs, led by STAT's cardiovascular reporter, Elaine Chen.

They'll be joining an array of other speakers on topics from how the health care system is failing Black patients to how the biggest deals in biotech went down. Speakers will include Vlad Coric, the CEO of BioHaven, Athena Contouriotis, the former CEO of Turning Point Therapeutics, health equity researcher Monica Peek, and Flagship founder Noubar Afeyan. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will join virtually, as will Hollywood legend turned Parkinson's advocate Michael J. Fox.
