In a special edition of the "First Opinion Podcast," STAT executive editor Rick Berke and senior writer Helen Branswell interviewed the country's former top infectious disease expert about some of the insights and revelations from his new memoir, "On Call: A Doctor's Journey in Public Service." The three discussed when Fauci knew that Covid-19 was a real threat, what worries him about bird flu, and the importance of navigating multiple presidential administrations with empathetic calm.
"For better or worse, I don't really think animus is helpful, particularly in my job," Fauci told STAT. "I think when you have animus to some people, it sometimes clouds your thinking."
